Football Offensive Line Blocking Drills

Football is a fair game, but to succeed you have to practice some offensive line blocking drills. The blocking drills will help you to improve two very important skills, which are drive blocking and the pass blocking. However, it is very important for the players to practice the proper blocking skills, otherwise results will not be desirable.

If a player wants to block the pass, he need to start with his feet. The position of the body depends on the position of a particular player in the field. For instance, center players will carry their weight on the front foot, but the guards will depend on their inside foot. When a player wants to block the pass, his position should be half squat, hands on his thighs and chest up with straight shoulders. This is the basic position to block the pass, it can be changed according to the situation. Players can use the same position to block the run as well.

Other than this basic position, hand placement and quick reaction can also help in pass blocking. Another important thing is the take-off angles, which are different for different blocks. First step drill is very basic and helpful. For this drill, you need to be in basic position and then take a first step very quickly. The important thing is to take this step without falling on the ground. Just like the first step drill, angle step drill is also very helpful in blocking drill. For angle step drill, place a cone just outside your foot. Keep your step in such a way that your foot get around the cone. You can place this cone at different angles for the sake of practice.

After practicing this basic drills, a player can start working on pass blocking. For that, player has to start with pass blocking position. You need to be ready to move to right or left of your position.
